Turbo Failure

Troubleshooting Common Turbo Issues

A turbocharger is a precision made assembly designed to last the lifespan of the engine it is fitted to, however in around 90% of the failure cases reported there are other reasons or problems that have led to the failure, but it is almost guaranteed that the turbocharger will receive the initial blame.

It is very important to work out why the turbo has failed, as just bolting on a replacement could easily end with another turbocharger failing for the same reasons.  If you are unsure or feel the need to identify what exactly has happened, Owen Developments offer an inspection service which gives you assurance and positive information regarding the failure and the possible causes.

If you would like to use this service, it is imperative that you do not strip the turbo, but send it directly to us in sufficient packaging with a completed Turbocharger Inspection Request Form inside your box. Details are given on the form as to the service you will receive and what choices you can make based on the findings. This form is listed under Owens Form Library.

As you will be aware, if the results show that the turbo failed due to engine related problems, you will not receive a warranty replacement from any turbo manufacturer or supplier, as it would not be an actual turbo fault or failure. Investigation is the key to ensure that when you fit the new turbo you do not retain the reasons for its original failure.

For initial help and information, Garrett has produced a Turbocharger Troubleshooting Guide. This is a useful guide to finding and solving minor turbocharging issues.
