On some applications a ported shroud can be offered. A ported shroud is feature found on the inducer section of a compressor housing, this feature extends by a small margin the surge line of any given compressor wheel. It works buy allowing a small re-circulation effect within the compressor wheel at the point at which surge starts to occur, thereby extending the usable size of the compressor map. The downside is that the compressor loses a few efficiency points but nothing serious. While this feature is popular on large commercial vehicle turbochargers it can also be used for gasoline applications where wide maps are needed. It should be noted that if a turbocharger is seriously miss-matched to an engine to the extent that it will only run correctly with a ported shroud cover then re examination of the initial match should be done. |
