A/R Ratio or Area / Radius is a measurement of the internal volume ( called the Volute) of a compressor or turbine housing, the larger the A/R the larger the internal volume of the volute.
For the turbine housing a larger A/R will allow a higher mass flow through the housing and thus a lower back pressure for the engine, however as the gas velocity will be slower due to the larger internal volume this can lead to less energy to the turbine wheel and a slower spool up time. The trick is to have a large enough A/R to allow the engine to breathe well but not too large so as to be detrimental to spool up time.
For the compressor stage the story is a little different because the function of the volute not the same, a larger compressor housing A/R provides a larger volume to trap the air escaping from the compressor wheel, this in turn allows more kinetic energy to be converted to pressure, but as with the turbine, too big an A/R can lead to poor performance.
