Owens supplies Garrett BB turbo for 2010 F2 cars

01 March 2010

The FIA Formula Two championship enjoyed a successful inaugural season in 2009, with each of the 25 Williams designed F2 cars using specially developed Owen Developments Garrett GT® ball bearing turbocharger, which helped to reliably boost the series’ production based VAG 1.8T 20-valve control engine to power outputs of up to 450bhp.

For 2010 the FIA Formula Two series will use a revised Williams produced car – the JPH1B – which represents a three second per lap improvement over the 2009 specification machine.

Part of the package of performance enhancements for 2010 is a revised F2 engine from motorsport powertrain specialist Mountune Racing, which features an upgraded Owen Developments Garrett® GT30 ball bearing based turbocharger.

For 2010 the Owen Development’s F2 specification Garrett® GT30 based unit features a larger inlet compressor wheel, an aerodynamically profiled bullet compressor lock nut and an upgraded internal heatshield.

In conjunction with motorsport specification ball bearing cages and a TIAL Sport™ stainless steel turbine housing, the Owen Development’s turbocharger helps increase the 1.8-litre F2 engine’s output to 425bhp at 8250rpm on standard boost, rising to 480bhp when the driver operated temporary ‘overboost’ button is deployed.

To ensure performance equality, F2 engines are specified to be 1.5% of the target power output, with each power plant using the sophisticated Pi Research Pectel MQ12 engine management system.

Commenting on the 2010 F2 project, Lee Owen said, “We are delighted to be involved with the prestigious FIA Formula Two series which builds upon the success of last year’s debut season. Once again it has been a pleasure working in conjunction with Mountune Racing to further enhance the specification of the Garrett GT® based turbochargers to meet the increased performance requirements of the F2 cars for 2010.”
