OWENS SEASON CRASHES TO A PREMATURE END WHILST RUNNING 2ND IN CHAMPIONSHIP
After a troubled and wet qualifying session, Mark found himself unusually 7th on the grid for the race on the 15th July.
Knowing a good start would be necessary to run in his normal position with the leading 4wd's, Mark made immediate headway off the line into 5th position battling a very defensive Ballard also driving an Evo in an uncustomary 4th position, throughout the opening lap.
However, the pair ran side by side away from camp corner with Ballard on the outside into folly corner, Mark edged ahead to find Ballard aiming for the inside line, obviously unaware of Mark's position on the circuit and with no room left, the two cars struck mid corner, travelling at speeds in excess of 130mph, hitting Mark's car on the rear quarter, sending him into an uncontrollable spin in front of Ballard and smashing into the Armco barrier with a massive impact. Ballard also made a heavy impact with the barrier but thankfully both drivers escaped unharmed.
However, every cloud has a silver lining and proves that the many hours spent installing a superb roll cage and the impeccable build quality of the car saved Mark from any injury despite the almighty size of the impact and proves that your priority should always be safety first and that's what counts more than anything.
Thank you so much to all our well-wishers that have clogged up our phone lines since the accident, the support and friendship has been fantastic and meant a lot to us. Also, thank you to all at Castle Combe, the marshals in particular, who had a very scary few seconds but were back at their posts later in the afternoon to allow racing to continue. I think the term to use is "Respect"!
As for us, watch this space - plans are afoot and we will be back doing what we love next season with something even better!
