Standard Turbochargers and OE/Manufacturer Turbocharger Supply

Buying a Standard Turbocharger from Owen Developments

Turbocharged production road cars have become commonplace, the combination of rising fuel prices and environmental concerns has led to this as turbocharged engines are considerably more efficient than naturally aspirated engines.

These turbochargers are normally designed for longevity and must incorporate safety, economy and warranty features, therefore to achieve the criteria required the turbochargers are designed so that they are not pushed to the edge of performance but are suited to ‘normal road use’.

Although Owen Developments is best known for fast road and motorsport turbochargers, standard replacement turbochargers from Mitsubishi, Garrett, Borg Warner and more are also available through the company at competitive prices. Contact Owen Developments by phone or email for more information.

To expedite buying a turbo it is helpful to identify precisely what turbo is being replaced, vehicle models are not enough to narrow it down. If you are able to locate and give the turbocharger part number which is always visible on the turbo itself, as well as any other identification marks, labels or numbers as there are currently up to 5,000 different turbochargers in current use, many of which have no visible differences.

Finding your Turbocharger's Part Number

There is a huge amount of variation in the turbocharger world; there are many different manufacturers which produce thousands of different turbos, each of which is available with a variety of options. Finding out exactly which turbo you have can be a daunting task but necessary for servicing or replacing a unit as well as identifying a fake. Owen Developments will always be able to advise you faster and more accurately if we know exactly which turbo you have.

The simplest way to identify a turbo (and therefore whether it's genuine) is by its part number which will usually be found on a plaque on the unit. However, almost every manufacturer places the plaque in a different position and presents the information in a different format. With this in mind, here is a simple guide to finding the part number. Armed with just the name of the manufacturer and the part number you would be surprised at how much faster quotes, parts, a rebuild or a replacement unit will arrive!

One final point; if your turbo was bought from Owen Developments, has been rebuilt or serviced here it should have an Owen Developments plaque on it regardless of who manufactured the unit. If you can provide an Owen Developments part number instead of the OEM’s part number the process will be expedited.

Performance Turbochargers for OEMs

As ‘normal’ road turbos are designed for longevity and quietness, not efficiency and performance, high performance road cars have very different needs from their turbochargers. Owen Developments in-house design and test facilities have been used extensively by motor manufacturers and high level specialist engineering companies to develop special edition performance upgrades for their production vehicles.

These projects are highly specialist and can take more than a year from start to finish. In these instances, the rules regarding what can be done to an individual's car as opposed to a motor manufacturer's requirements, selling to the public with a full warranty for example is an entirely different matter.

Owen Development’s involvement in performance started initially with the limited production of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution FQ400, the Warrior pick-up and the Subaru Cosworth Impreza CS4. More recently Owen Developments was approached by Radical Sportscars to develop turbochargers for the RXC Turbo, with the results being reviewed very favourably by the motoring press and a street-legal Nürburgring lap record attempt is being organised.

Owen Developments has the experience, engineering ability, with bespoke in-house precision machining, vehicle electronics and test facilities, to cover every angle required for such prestigious projects. For advice on project work, contact the company by phone or email for advice on your particular application.
